Jean Claude Van Damme: The critics’ darling

After decades in which his only critical hits were the ones landed on his fight partners, Jean Claude Van Damme is suddenly an acclaimed actor

JCVD

“He opens his heart and offers the audience the performance of his life,”; “subtle, funny, and capable of self-deprecation, he acts convincingly”; a performance “that is not only touching, but troubling and moving too”. These reviews aren’t for Ian McKellen or Sean Penn. They are for Jean-Claude Van Damme, the muscles from Brussels.

Unusually for the action star, he is receiving rave reviews from snooty critics for his performance in JCVD, a fake autobiographical movie currently out in French cinemas. The plot sees him back in Belgium after his Hollywood career crashed and burned: he is fighting with the taxman, he may lose custody of his daughter and (gasp) Steven Seagal beat him to the latest action part. At the post office, he gets embroiled in a hostage crisis and reveals his existentialist musings to the world.

From the online clips available, Van Damage is brilliant in this Spinal Tap-like feature and reveals a fantastic dramatic flair. So after Sly Stallone, maybe it’s time to recognise Jean-Claude as the talented thesp he is?

Clive Wants To Save Midnight Meat Train!

That’s happening at Lionsgate where the studio’s phones and email accounts are jammed with angry fans for the past week. They’re making a stink because new Lionsgate topper Joe Drake appears to be dumping all of ex-prez Peter Block’s movies. That includes Midnight Meat Train, the adaptation of the Barker short story that’s a fan fave. Supposedly the trailer tested higher than any film in Lionsgate history. But when Drake took over, he promptly bumped Midnight Meat Train from its May 16th release date. The result was that Rogue Pictures’ The Strangers (which was skedded two weekends later) had zero competition in the hard-R category. And guess who was exec producer of The Strangers? Joe Drake. Click here and here for more… from Clive –

…It has become apparent that the theatrical distribution of The Midnight Meat Train has been curtailed, with reports that the movie may be seen on only 100 screens. Word has come to us that the substantial excitement surrounding the movie has now developed into an active campaign by movie-lovers for its full theatrical release.

Clive is throwing his support behind the growing movement. He is asking all who would like to see the movie get the wide distribution that many people believe it deserves to add their voice…

signature.gif “I am very excited about this possibility and I would passionately encourage everybody who cares about my work to use this chance to change the minds of the folks at Lionsgate.

“This is exciting! I really think, this late in the day, that grassroots support for our movie could significantly improve our chances of reaching a much bigger audience theatrically. The picture is worth the effort, I believe.”

RIP (April 7, 1946 – June 15, 2008) Stan Winston lived here… in my second favorite home

Click for slideshow of home: Stan Winston Lived Here
Located at 21622 Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, the three-bedroom house in Malibu that the four-time Oscar-winning Winston, 61, is selling was built in 1957. Features in the house include three and a half baths, a great room, teak and stainless steel finishes everywhere, a beachside master suite with two walk-in closets and a fireplace, two en suite bedrooms, and a den/media room with a dropdown screen and a projector, according to listing information. The house is located on La Costa Beach, with 35 feet of frontage, the Journal reported.Winston had purchased the property in 2005 for $6.2 million and rebuilt the house — and could be mine for $11.95M.

I’ll never forget my meetings at his office and the tours of his facility I got from his staff: amazing history!
